I listen to Texas Public Radio on the way to JBSA every morning, and I keep hearing this thing about The Listen Challenge. Googled it and found many clones, but this one caught my eye:
My wife the supernurse has diagnosed me as an “Interrupter”.
In my favor, I have sought books and meditated on patience and active listening. She’ll tell you I’m getting better.
My schema is to interrupt when I sense that snowball effect of a discussion turning into a battlefield, and try to slow down the process before it goes all nuclear.
That doesn’t work/.
If you interrupt someone, you stifle their communications, which contributes to their frustrations that they were trying to communicate in the first place.
So, I’m actively working on talking less and listening more.
